Climate activists decapitate iconic Berlin Christmas tree

BERLIN: Climate activists said on Wednesday they sawed off the end of the Christmas tree erected in front of Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. The Last Generation group said two of its members used a hydraulic lift and a handsaw to cut two meters (six feet) from the top of the 15-meter (50-foot) tree and hang a banner reading: “This is just the tip of the Christmas tree.”
German police confirmed the incident.
In a statement, the group said it wanted to emphasize that Germany sees so far only the “peak” of the climate catastrophe that is happening in the world.
He called on the government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to do more to fight global warming.
The group has drawn attention and anger in recent months with direct actions including blocking major roads and throwing food at famous paintings.
Criticizing such a protest, Scholz had called on activists to instead show “a little creativity”.
