1st Test: Conway, Latham lead strong New Zealand reply against Pakistan | Cricket News

KARACHI: Devon Conway and Tom Latham forged an unbroken opening 165 partnership to lead New Zealand’s strong response to the opening set of Pakistan 438 at the opener in Karachi on Tuesday.
Conway was at bat on 82 after hitting 1,000 tries in 19 innings, the fastest by a New Zealand batsman.
Latham was 78 with New Zealand, who scored three-and-a-half over, still 273 behind.
How it happened: 1st test, day 2
After Pakistan recaptured on 317/5 on the second day, the local captain Babar Azam fell in the first round but the lower order resisted strongly, led by Agha Salman’s first hundred test.
Babar was unable to add to his overnight tally of 161 and was overtaken by Tim Southee’s bowling, but the collapse New Zealand wanted failed to materialize.
Hitting with the tailenders, Agha cleverly turned the shot and raised his cent with back-to-back fours against spinner Ish Sodhi.
Agha was the last Pakistani wicket to fall, trapped by Southee (3-69) after trying to hit the bowler over the center wicket.
Agha’s challenging 103 included 17 fours.
Conway and latham denied Pakistan an early breakthrough and shared a century position before the home side managed to create an opportunity.
Conway was 57 when he attempted a cut off left arm spinner Nauman Ali and Pakistan’s halfhearted appeal to be caught late was dismissed.
Nauman looked convinced that Conway had edged the ball, and replays later confirmed this, but Babar, who was standing in the slides, opted not to review the decision.
Conway and Latham had little trouble coping with young Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed, who claimed 17 wickets from two matches in his first series against England this month.
Babar himself had three overs, but his part-time rotation failed to make the breakthrough.
