China: One dead in highway pile-up involving hundreds of cars

BEIJING (Reuters) – One person died in a traffic jam on a highway involving hundreds of vehicles in central China, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Wednesday, with footage from the accident showing scenes of chaos.
Aerial footage showed hundreds of passenger cars, vans and trucks – many of which had crashed into each other – piled up on a section of the highway in thick fog.
Other viral videos posted online showed the mangled remains of several vehicles that crashed into others.
The accident occurred due to low visibility due to fog near the town of Zhengzhou, Henan Provinceand involved at least 200 vehicles, state media reported.
“On Wednesday morning, a sudden accumulation of fog occurred on the Yellow River Bridge in Zhengzhou, which caused a traffic accident involving the collision of several vehicles,” CCTV quoted Zhengzhou authorities as saying, adding that one person died.
Emergency rescue efforts were launched shortly after the crash and the crash site is currently being cleared for normal traffic to resume, according to the report.
Road accidents are common in China due to a lack of strict safety checks. In September, 27 passengers died after a bus ferried them to quarantine facilities in the South West Guizhou Province knocked down on a highway.
