Joe Burrow: Bengals quarterback says team has ‘mixed’ feelings about playing next game

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says he ‘probably wants to play’ his team’s next game, but also understands others aren’t following Damar Hamlin’s collapse Monday.

Buffalo Bills safety Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest while playing against the Bengals, an incident that visibly upset players on both teams and resulted in the game being postponed.

As the world eagerly awaits more updates on Hamlin’s condition, the NFL announced Wednesday that the Bengals’ game against the Baltimore Ravens is still scheduled for 1 p.m. ET in Cincinnati on Sunday.

“We haven’t had that discussion as a team,” Burrow told reporters when asked if the team felt comfortable playing on weekends.

“There are certainly parallel discussions about it, but that’s not where we are now. So we have a game to play on Sunday.

Hamlin’s heart rate was restored on the field as staff tended to him, the Bills said, before he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Hamlin remains in intensive care, although he has shown “signs of improvement,” his team said in a statement Wednesday.

It is still unclear what led to the cardiac arrest. CNN has requested comment from the hospital system, which does not release information about Hamlin or grant interviews with his medical staff.

Burrow, who was on the court when Hamlin collapsed, says there’s no consensus within his team about where their next game will go.

“We weren’t asked that,” Burrow added when asked if players had been consulted to play.

“I’m sure if you surveyed the dressing room there would be mixed votes on this. Personally, I think playing is going to be difficult, but there are people who want to play too and others who don’t. .

“Personally, I probably want to play. I think getting back to normal as quickly as possible is personally how I deal with this stuff. But like I said, everyone has a different way of dealing with it.

Burrow added that the team prepared as usual for Sunday’s game, but it remains “a scary and emotional time” for everyone involved.

“As unfortunate as it is, we have a game to play on Sunday,” he said.

“It’s our job to go out there and execute and play the game the way we have to play it to go and win. That’s how it is.

“We had discussions as a team about what happened and where we are and this is where we are.”
