Nepal’s first parliamentary session after the appointment of new Prime Minister Prachanda will start on Monday

KATHMANDU: the first of Nepal Parliament session after the appointment of the new Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is due to start here on Monday and will focus on the elections for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. The session will also focus on Prime Minister Prachanda’s vote of confidence on January 9. Last month, Nepalese President Bidhya Devi Bhandari convened the first session of the new parliament on January 9 after the country went to the polls on November 20.
The 68-year-old CPN-Maoist Center leader was sworn in as prime minister for the third time on December 26 after radically quitting the Nepalese Congress-led pre-election alliance and joining the leader of the opposition KP Sharma Oli. .
The main leaders of the main political parties will address the first meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) which is due to take place in Parliament here on Monday.
It was agreed at a multi-party meeting held at the parliament building on Friday, according to sources at the parliament’s secretariat.
The meeting was called by the longest serving HoR MP, Pashupati Shamsher JB Rana, who is also the leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra party.
During the meeting, it was decided that the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives would be held on January 21 and 23 respectively.
Prachanda was appointed Prime Minister in accordance with Article 76 paragraph 2 of the Constitution with the support of 169 members of the HoR. A Prime Minister appointed under this provision is required to seek a vote of confidence within 30 days of his appointment.
New cabinet includes three deputy prime ministers – Bishnu Paul of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist of Oli (CPN-UML), Narayan Kaji Shrestha of the CPN-Maoist Center and Rabi Lamichhane of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Paudel said the incumbent government would act quickly once the vote of confidence is taken and the cabinet meeting is over.
The Deputy Prime Minister assured that the government will move aggressively to shoulder national responsibility and address the burning issues, including the shortage of cash, facing the country.
The prime minister will expand the cabinet to give full form to the government once he secures the vote of confidence, a source close to the Maoist Center has said.
Prime Minister Prachanda needs 138 votes for a clear majority in the House.
He has the support of seven parties, including the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist of Oli (CPN-UML) and the newly formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
