KATHMANDU: Prime Minister of Nepal Pushp Kamal Dahal is likely to visit India on his first overseas trip in late February or early March, Nepali outlet The Kathmandu Post reported on Sunday.
Dahal’s visit would take place after the election of the new president, the Nepal-based news agency said, citing the two CPN (Maoist Center) leaders who are aware of the developments.
“However, if the Indian side insists on the visit before the election of the new president, the trip can even take place earlier,” said one.
The presidential election is scheduled for February as President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s term expires at the end of March. The election takes place one month before the expiration of the incumbent’s term, in accordance with the constitution.
According to officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepalese Embassy in Delhi, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra will visit Kathmandu to extend an invitation to the Prime Minister, most likely after January 26, that the India marks as its Republic Day. The two parties would then discuss the visit and agree on a certain date. Officials said the tone of the visit will be set through a series of bilateral mechanisms, the Kathmandu Post reported.
Dahal visited India last July at the request of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Chairman JP Nadda. Dahal had previously met Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
