MOSCOW: The Kremlin said on Wednesday that if Western countries supply Ukraine with heavy tanks, they will be destroyed on the battlefield, as Kyiv awaits a decision from Berlin on deliveries of Leopard 2 tanks.
“Technologically, it’s a failed plan. It’s an overestimate of the potential it will add to the Ukrainian military,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“These tanks burn like all the others. They are just very expensive.”
The Kremlin offered a variety of responses to the Kyiv allies’ plans to support Ukrainian troops with the Leopard tank model.
Peskov said earlier this week that any German supply of tanks to Ukraine would leave a “lasting mark” on bilateral relations between Moscow and Berlin.
He has previously said that Western weapons in Ukraine only prolong the conflict and ultimately increase the suffering of Ukrainian civilians.
Berlin was due to announce a decision later Wednesday on whether to allow other countries that maintain stocks of leopards to send them to Kyiv.
