The number of deaths from floods in the earthquake-stricken area of Turkey rises to 16

Rescue teams recovered two more bodies on Thursday after floods hit two Turkish provinces already devastated by last month’s powerful earthquake, bringing the death toll from the new disaster to 16.

Flash floods caused by torrential rains on Wednesday turned roads in Adiyaman and Sanlifurfa provinces into rivers, washing away cars and inundating homes and campsites housing earthquake survivors.

Most of the deaths occurred in Sanliurfa, where rescuers on Thursday found the bodies of two people reported missing amid mud and debris left by the floods. Search parties were still looking for a missing person.

In Adiyaman, two people have drowned after a container house housing a family of earthquake survivors was swept away by the raging waters. A nurse and her two-year-old baby are still missing.

Adiyaman and Sanliurfa were among 11 Turkish provinces that were hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Feb. 6, killing more than 48,000 people in Turkey and about 6,000 in northern Syria.

Meanwhile, a moderately strong earthquake shook a city in northeastern Turkey on Thursday, sending people onto the streets in fear.

The magnitude 4.8 earthquake was centered in the city of Bolu, about 162 miles east of Istanbul.

Bolu mayor Tanju Ozcan told HaberTurk television there were no reports of damage to any buildings in the city, but said many people rushed outdoors in fear.

He said doctors had responded to “one or two” cases of panic attacks. Some people were also injured after jumping from balconies.
