NEW DELHI: Star doubles a pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy And Chirag Shetty maintained the challenge of India living at Swiss Open Super Series 300 badminton tournament, entering the men’s doubles final in Basel on Saturday.
The dynamic doubles team overcame a mid-match slump to book a place in the top clash.
World number six and second seeded Indian pair beat third seeds Ong If Sin and Malaysia’s Teo Ee Yi 21-19, 17-21, 21-17 in a thrilling semi-final that lasted one hour and nine minutes.
Satwik and Chirag, bronze medalists at the 2022 World Championships, will face the unranked Chinese duo of Ren Xiang Yu and Tan Qiang in Sunday’s summit clash.
By virtue of that victory, Satwik and Chirag had drawn 3-3 with Ong and Teo in a head-to-head match.
Earlier, Satwik and Chirag beat Danish pair of Jeppe Bay and Lasse Molhede in three hard-fought matches.
The Indian pair completed the challenge in 54 minutes, winning 15-21, 21-11, 21-14.
The win came after a fierce 84-minute battle in the quarter-finals.
Satwik and Chirag are the only remaining Indian contenders in a tournament where the likes of PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen suffered early defeats.
In the quarter-finals, the Indian pair didn’t get off to a great start as they easily lost the opener at 15-21. The duo managed to come back in the middle of the match, reducing the deficit to a single point as they led 15-16.
However, the Danish pair won six straight points to wrap up the opener with ease.
The Indian pair picked up the pace in Game 2 and quickly earned a seven-point cushion at the halfway point. They extended the lead to 10 points as parity was restored.
Game 3 started on a level playing field, but the Indians were fantastic at net as they first took an 11-7 lead and then held a seven-point advantage until the end of the game. to enter the final four in style.
A tournament win will be a nice comeback for the pair after a disappointing early round outing at the England Championships.
