BANGKOK: After a decent show in Malaysia, star Indian commuters including PV Sindhu And Kidambi Srikanthwill look for consistency as they begin their campaign in the Thailand Open Super 500 badminton tournament which begins here on Tuesday.
While Sindhu reached the semi-finals last week, Srikanth signed with a quarter-final in Kuala Lumpur and the pair will be looking to go further in the draw to keep their title hopes alive.
Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu was close to breaking her title spell when she reached Madrid’s Spanish Masters final, but Srikanth has struggled since her epic run to the Thomas Cup victory last year.
The 27-year-old from Hyderabad, who slipped two places to world number 13 this week, will face Canadian Michelle Li in the first round, while Srikanth will be looking to take some advice from HS Prannoy when he takes on the Masters runner-up from Malaysia Weng Hong Yang from China.
While a win for Sindhu is likely to put her head to head with Chinese sixth seed Wang Zhi Yi, Srikanth will have to compete with Chinese third seed Shi Yu Qi if he can clear the opening hurdle. .
Lakshya Sen, who slipped out of the top 20 after a dismal run this season, will open against Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei. Sen had lost to Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long in consecutive matches last week.
Orleans Masters winner Priyanshu Rajawat will also be in the fray this week when he takes on Malaysian Ng Tze Yong in the first round.
After skipping the Malaysia Masters, India’s top pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy And Chirag Shetty will be back this week, taking on Frenchmen Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar.
Male pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala, female pair of Ashwini Bhat K and Shikha Gautam are also in the fray.
