Ins Vikrant: MH60R Helicopter Makes First Landing on INS Vikrant | News from India

KOCHI: In a significant milestone for the Indian Navya MH 60′RomeoThe helicopter (MH60R), which is awaiting commissioning, made a maiden landing on the locally designed and built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant on Wednesday. Naval Air Station INS Garuda Kochi helicopter landed on the aircraft carrier somewhere in the Arabian Sea.
The navy said the integration of the helicopter with naval warships is a major boost to the navy’s antisubmarine warfare and fleet support capability. The integration would further enhance the Navy’s ability to counter submarine threats, monitor maritime activities and conduct surveillance operations.
Early on 19 May, an MH 60R made its first sea landing aboard an in-house designed and built naval destroyer, INS Kolkata in the Arabian Sea off Kochi.
The MH60R helicopter is a versatile platform known for its outstanding anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surveillance, anti-shipping and search and rescue capabilities. The ongoing modernization of the Indian Navy’s air fleet will receive a major boost with the introduction of multi-purpose helicopters procured from US Defense Major Lockheed Martin.
The MH60Rs, considered one of the most advanced maritime helicopters in the world, are designed to operate from frigates, destroyers, cruisers and aircraft carriers. It is an all-weather helicopter designed to support multiple missions with state-of-the-art avionics/sensors. The introduction of these helicopters would further enhance the three dimensional capabilities of the Indian Navy.
