BUDAPEST: Sangeeta Phogatone of six wrestlers who protested WFI chef Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar Mantar, on Saturday won a bronze medal in the non-Olympic 59kg category which featured six grapplers at the Hungary ranking series tournament here.
Sangeeta started with a crushing loss in the fall but bounced back with a win in his second fight. She lost her semi-final but won the bronze play-off 6-2 against young Hungarian Viktoria Borsos, silver medalist of the U-20 World Championship.
Sangeeta, who won the national championship at 62kg last year, started with a fall loss to American Jennifer Page Rogers.
The contest lasted just 80 seconds with the American running away with a right leg attack that led to a takedown and several barrel rolls. Eventually, the American got into position to pin Sangeeta.
In her next fight against American Brenda Olivia Reyna, the Indian managed to shake off the rust and was fast in her movements. She entered the break with a 4-2 lead and continued to consolidate to eventually win the fight by technical superiority.
A win and loss in a six-woman draw put her in the semi-finals against Poland’s Magdalena Urszula Glodek.
Sangeeta launched double leg attacks but lacked the power to convert those moves into points. Still, she led twice, first 2-0 and then 4-2m, but Glodek’s counter-attacking moves were good enough to rush to a narrow 6-4 victory.
In the bronze medal play-off against local favorite Borsos, Sangeeta took the lead with a takedown move. The Hungarian fought back to make it 2-2 but Sangeeta quickly launched a fast and furious attack.
Borsos put up a good defense but Sangeeta broke through it for a 4-2 lead.
In the second period, Sangeeta didn’t lose a single point and added two to his kitty to win the bronze medal.
