Man dies in chaos as crowds swell at Surat station to board Bihar-bound train for Chhath festival | Surat News

SURAT: A 40-year-old man lost his life, and two others were hospitalized during chaos at Surat railway station in Gujarat on Saturday as passengers rushed to board a special Bihar-bound train for the upcoming Chhath festival.
The crowded conditions led to panic attacks and dizziness among some passengers.
Sarjo Kumari, Superintendent of Police (Western Railway), reported that the rush resulted in people fainting.One passenger experienced a heart complication, prompting a quick response from a policeman who performed CPR before the individual was taken to the hospital.
The victim has been identified as Ankit Virendra Singh.
Jayesh Patel, the resident medical officer of SMIMER Hospital, stated that one person was declared dead upon falling due to the crowding, and two others are being treated for breathlessness.
The Chhath festival attracts many workers from Surat’s diamond and textile industries, who travel to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for the celebration. Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi noted that the police made efforts to control the crowd, and he plans to visit the railway station soon.
In response to the festive season rush, the Western Railway has implemented special measures, including operating additional trains and deploying personnel from the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force for security and crowd management. The railway is running a significant number of special trains during this period.
