Cross-channel train services resume for Christmas holidaymakers as French strikes end | UK News

Holidaymakers heading to the continent for Christmas will start resuming their journeys after a strike in France brought rail services to a halt.

Thousands were left stranded on both sides of the Channel when the French workers rejected an end-of-year bonus pay offer.

Services affected included the Eurostar, which runs passenger services to and from London St Pancras, and also Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, which runs vehicle-carrying trains to and from Folkestone.

The disruption started about midday and at least 30 Eurostar trains were cancelled, with many trains turning back to where they started.

Eurotunnel said that management and trade union representatives had reached an agreement that meant services will “resume progressively this evening and Eurostar tomorrow morning”.

Getlink, the company that manages and operates the infrastructure of the Channel Tunnel, said trade unions had rejected a €1,000 (£866) bonus proposed by management.

The union had demanded the amount be trebled.
