ED sends extradition request to UAE for Mahadev app accused | India News

NEW DELHI: Enforcement Directorate has sent an extradition request to the UAE seeking repatriation of Mahadev Online Book betting syndicate masterminds Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal while simultaneously working diplomatic channels to get them deported, which is a less cumbersome process.
While Uppal is in jail in Dubai, Chandrakar is under house arrest, both detained based on a red corner notice issued against them on ED’s request. Sources said though India has filed a extradition request, it was trying to get the two deported without going through the extradition process which may take six months as it involves execution of requests through local courts. Unlike extradition, deportation can be arranged through local government’s executive order and skips the court proceedings.
Chandrakar and Uppal are being investigated for payoffs allegedly given to close aides of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel. ED recently told a court in Raipur that a cash courier, Asim Das, arrested during assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, was sticking to his claim that Rs 5.4 crore recovered from him was meant to be delivered to Baghel.
For ED, bringing back the duo is important to verify claims made by Das in the case that huge bribes were paid to the CM and his associates as ‘protection’ money.
