BHUBANESWAR: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday equated Narendra Modi with Vladimir Putin and said if BJP retains power in the upcoming polls, the Prime Minister will usher in a dictatorship like the one in Russia.
Addressing a gathering in the Odisha capital, Kharge claimed this could be the last chance for people to pick their leader, save democracy and the Constitution because if BJP wins again, Modi will not allow elections in future.”If BJP comes to power again, Modi’s dictatorship will increase. Democracy will be butchered. Modi will run the country the way Putin does in Russia. You decide whether you want to live like slaves under the dictator or not,” Kharge said.
The Congress chief also hit out at Nitish Kumar for parting ways with the opposition INDIA bloc. Without naming the Bihar CM, who quit the Grand Alliance with RJD and Congress and teamed up with BJP again on Sunday, Kharge said some weak leaders are leaving parties or breaking alliances due to Modi’s fear.
“The exits of one or two darpok leaders will not weaken us. Our unity is intact. Modi has been intimidating the opposition by using the CBI and ED against them,” Kharge added.
The Congress president accused Modi of “unsuccessfully trying to muzzle” Rahul Gandhi. Kharge said Rahul was a fearless leader who was uniting the country through his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The yatra is scheduled to cover some districts of Odisha next month.
