Russia launches drone assault on Kyiv and southern regions: Ukraine’s military

NEW DELHI: Russia conducted drone attacks overnight on Kyiv and southern Ukraine, causing damage to a gas pipeline and residential buildings in the port of Mykolaiv, according to Ukraine’s military.
At least one civilian was injured in the attack. Ukraine’s air force reported that they successfully destroyed 40 out of 45 Shahed attack drones launched by Russia. The capital city of Kyiv was on high alert for almost two hours, but all the drones were intercepted before reaching the city. No casualties or destruction were reported in or near the capital.
The southern regions of Ukraine, particularly the Mykolaiv region near the Black Sea, also faced drone attacks. Ukraine’s air defence systems destroyed 26 Shahed drones over a period of five hours. The military stated that the enemy’s main targets were the coastal infrastructure and agro-industrial facilities.
In Mykolaiv, falling debris from a downed drone and the blast wave caused damage to residential buildings and a gas pipeline. Additionally, four drones were downed in the Black Sea port of Odesa. It is important to note that the reports have not been independently verified by Reuters. Both Russia and Ukraine have been escalating their air attacks in recent months, targeting critical energy, military, and transport infrastructure away from the frontline.
