‘Till I am alive … ‘ : Assam CM Himanta Sarma’s child marriage comments leads to opposition walkout | India News

NEW DELHI: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday vowed to “not allow child marriages in Assam” after the state Cabinet repealed the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935, amid opposition from the Congress and AIUDF.
“Till I am alive, I won’t allow child marriage to happen in Assam,” Sarma said.
The AIUDF had moved an adjournment motion to discuss the cabinet decision, but Speaker Biswajit Daimary denied it. The Congress argued that amendments could have been made to the Act instead of repealing it.
Responding to the opposition’s criticism, Sarma said “I would like to challenge you politically, I will shut down this shop before 2026.”
Both the Congress and AIUDF staged a walkout while CPI (M) member and an Independent MLA remained in the House.
The Assam Cabinet passed the Assam Repealing Ordinance, 2024, on Friday repealing the British-era Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935.
