Former US President Donald Trump targetted President Joe Biden and his recent State of the Union address, accusing him of being “angry and mentally disturbed” and suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome.”
In his final address, Biden indirectly referred to Trump as his “predecessor” multiple times while discussing various issues such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, immigration, the January 6 insurrection, abortion, and gun control.
During an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that Biden’s condition of “Trump derangement syndrome” could only be cured through impeachment. He further commented that Biden seemed angry, mentally disturbed, and misrepresented facts on many subjects during his address. However, he acknowledged that Biden managed to deliver the speech without any major issues, jokingly adding that he wasn’t carried out in a straightjacket.
“He was angry, mentally disturbed, and misrepresenting a lot of the facts concerning almost every subject he discussed.”
“But he got through it. He is still breathing, and they didn’t have to carry him out in a straightjacket,” Trump said. “Other than that, I think he did a terrible job,” the report quoted him as saying.
Biden, in his hour-long address, criticized Trump for failing in a president’s fundamental duty to care. He pointed out Trump’s submissive behavior towards Putin, quoting him as saying, “Do whatever the hell you want.”
Trump had recently expressed his willingness to allow Russia to act as they pleased towards NATO member countries that didn’t meet defense spending guidelines, disregarding the collective defense clause.
Referring to the mob attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, Biden emphasized that it posed the gravest threat to democracy since the Civil War. He stated that while the threat to democracy persists, he will not bury the truth of that day, unlike his predecessor and some others who seek to do so.
“January 6 and the lies about the 2020 election and the plots to steal the election posed the gravest threat to our democracy since the Civil War. But they failed. America stood strong, and democracy prevailed,” Biden said.
Trump responded by suggesting that Biden repeatedly mentioned him because he was leading in the polls by 14 points. Both Biden and Trump won their respective presidential nomination primaries held in 15 states, setting the stage for a rematch in the 2024 presidential elections.
