NEW DELHI: Panic ensued on a New York City subway as passengers witnessed a violent altercation resulting in a man being shot in the head during Thursday’s rush hour. The confrontation unfolded on a northbound A train in Brooklyn, right after the 4:45 pm peak, following a heated exchange between two individuals.
The incident began when a 32-year-old man entered the subway at the Nostrand Avenue station, soon to be confronted by a 36-year-old, who witnesses described as ‘aggressive and provocative.’ The situation quickly deteriorated as the older man, revealing a sharp object, engaged with the younger in a physical brawl, according to Michael Kemper, Chief of Transit for the Police Department.
The melee escalated rapidly as the aggressor brandished a firearm, leading to a desperate struggle between the two men. A bystander captured the fight’s intensity, showing the 36-year-old punching and ultimately overpowering the younger man, even as shouts of ‘you stabbed me?’ echoed through the carriage.
The chaotic scene led to widespread fear among passengers, with videos showcasing the urgent calls for help and the desperate attempts to flee the scene. The train eventually halted at Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets station, where the 32-year-old was apprehended and the injured aggressor was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The event has sparked outrage and fear, highlighting the increasing safety concerns on New York’s subway system.
