UK privacy watchdog launches probe into Kate Middleton’s medical data ‘breach’

NEW DELHI: The UK’s privacy watchdog is currently looking into reports alleging that staff at a hospital tried to access Kate Middleton‘s private medical records while she was undergoing abdominal surgery in London, the Daily Mirror reported.
The incident took place at The London Clinic, where the Princess of Wales received treatment in January. The hospital has started its own investigation following claims that at least one staff member attempted to view Princess Kate’s medical notes, as reported by the ‘Daily Mirror.’ “We can confirm that we have received a breach report and are assessing the information provided,” stated a spokesperson for the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Upon discovering the breach, the hospital reached out to Kensington Palace, the office of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The palace responded by stating, “This is a matter for the London Clinic.” The London Clinic emphasised its commitment to patient privacy, stating, “We firmly believe that all our patients, no matter their status, deserve total privacy and confidentiality regarding their medical information.”
This incident brings to mind a previous data breach incident from 2012, where two Australian DJs impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles in a prank call to the hospital where Kate Middleton was receiving treatment. Tragically, nurse Jacintha Saldanha, originally from India, committed suicide after being involved in transferring the call and unintentionally disclosing details about Kate’s condition.
The recent breach of Kate’s privacy comes amidst speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding her recovery from surgery. Kensington Palace had earlier announced that the Princess of Wales was progressing well post-surgery, but declined to comment further on her private medical situation. It is anticipated that the Princess will resume her official royal duties after the Easter break.
To dispel any rumors about her health, the Princess and Prince William were recently spotted shopping at a farm shop in Windsor over the weekend. The palace hopes this public appearance will help address any misunderstandings, particularly after Kate apologized for a recent photo editing error involving her children.
The investigation into the breach of Kate Middleton’s medical records underlines the importance of patient confidentiality and privacy, regardless of one’s status. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for strict protocols to safeguard sensitive information within healthcare settings.
