Pakistan forces foil attack on naval base

ISLAMABAD: Separatists in Pakistan‘s restive Balochistan tried to storm a naval base in Turbat late Monday before all four attackers were killed in retaliatory fire along with a trooper, the military said Tuesday.
Banned outfit Baluch Liberation Army (BLA) said fighters of its suicide unit, Majeed Brigade, mounted the raid and claimed they inflicted “heavy casualties” on the Pakistani forces.Last week, BLA terrorists had targeted a govt complex in Gwadar in the same province.

According to military media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the terrorists attempted to attack PNS Siddique, one of Pakistan’s largest naval air stations, but were thwarted by “swift and effective response” from the troops.

“Forces in the vicinity were mobilised to support the naval troops. During the intense fire exchange, a 24-year-old sepoy was killed,” ISPR said in a statement.
Saeed Ahmed Umrani, the region’s commissioner, said heavy firing and explosions were reported from the vicinity of Turbat airport, with the terrorists attacking from three sides. Locals heard over a dozen blasts. The firing began around 10pm and lasted late into the night.
Pakistan has witnessed a terror surge in the past year, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. According to a security report released recently, 97 attacks occurred last month alone, killing 87 people.
