Uttarakhand village that called poll boycott to get road ‘in 8 months’

URRDA said the delay in building a road to the remote village, situated at 6,000ft altitude, in Chamoli district was due to “change in alignment because of landslides in the area”.

Taking cognizance of a report published in TOI on Thursday, which highlighted how the 250-odd voters in Dumak have decided to boycott LS polls after being fed up of constant delays on the road construction, Uttarakhand Rural Roads Development Agency CEO Kamrendra Singh issued a statement saying the pending work will be completed in the next eight months. He claimed that the delay was due to “change in alignment because of landslides in the area.”

The statement, signed by CEO and the agency’s chief engineer Ravi Singh, stated that construction on the first 20.5km stretch & the 23 to 29km stretch have been completed, with work on four connecting lanes ongoing. However, construction of a bridge in the middle of the two has been delayed due to it being in a landslide zone.
Officials added that landslides in 2018 and 2021 necessitated changes in the alignment . However, there was disagreement among villagers over the proposed changes.
