KOLKATA/COOCH BEHAR: PM Narendra Modi assured Thursday that the “culprits of Sandeshkhali will spend their entire lives in jail”, while accusing Trinamool govt in Bengal of failing Sandeshkhali’s women, who have accused local TMC leaders of sexual harassment.
During a Lok Sabha campaign rally in Cooch Behar, Modi also accused Trinamool govt of corruption and obstructing the implementation of development schemes initiated by the Centre.He alleged that BJP’s political rivals were spreading misinformation about Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), while reassuring the audience that those who have faith in “Ma Bharati” would receive citizenship. “This is Modi ki guarantee,” the PM said.
Modi highlighted both corruption and Sandeshkhali to show how Trinamool was actively working against the people of Bengal. “The country has seen how the entire state machinery was used to protect the tormentors of Sandeshkhali. We have vowed to punish them,” the PM said.
“Trinamool is also trying to save those involved in the ration and teacher recruitment scams. They are trying to save those who duped members of Modi’s family. That was your money and no one can loot that. They are trying to stop the investigations. I say ‘remove corruption’. They say ‘protect the corrupt’. But their threats will not work with Modi. You will see more stringent investigations in the next five years,” he promised. Modi asserted that 140 crore Indians are “my family”.
The development that India had seen over the past 10 years was “just the trailer”, he said, promising that 3 crore women from Bengal would become “Lakhpati Didis” in BJP govt’s next term.
“We freed Jammu and Kashmir from Article 370. We brought Women’s Reservation Bill. Ram Mandir was built in Ayodhya after 500 years,” the PM said, giving examples of how Modi’s guarantee worked. “If the intent is right, the result is also right,” he asserted, giving examples of the schemes to provide houses, toilets, piped water, and cooking gas.
Commenting against the backdrop of a campaign by opposition parties, including TMC, which has claimed that applying for CAA would turn legal citizens into foreigners, Modi said: “They (INDIA bloc) never cared for marginalised communities. Trinamool, Left, and Congress never cared for Rajbanshi, Namasudra, and Matua communities. Now that we have brought CAA, they are spreading rumours and lies.”
“Trinamool Congress and Left Front will try to intimidate you. But you have seen how I have worked in the past 10 years, you can trust Modi’s guarantee,” the PM said in a constituency with a sizeable section of Rajbanshis. The venue was 116km from Jalpaiguri’s Malbazar, where CM Mamata Banerjee held her second rally of the day and targeted BJP and CAA.
Trinamool has consistently said that it will not allow CAA or NRC to be implemented in Bengal. Its leaders have also said that anyone applying for citizenship under CAA will immediately be identified as an “outsider”.
