IPL: Records tumble as Lucknow Super Giants breach Fortress Chepauk | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Australia’s big-hitting Marcus Stoinis smoked a dazzling unbeaten 124 as Lucknow Super Giants chased down a steep 211 to pull off a famous win six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Tuesday.
It was Stoinis’ maiden IPL century and his second in T20 cricket as it trumped an unbeaten 108 by CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, stunning the fans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Lucknow looked in trouble at 88 for 3 after 11 overs but Stoinis put on 70-run stand with Nicholas Pooran, who hit 34 off 15 balls, and an unbeaten 65-run stand with Deepak Hooda to achieve victory with three balls to spare.

Stoinis reached his hundred in 56 balls as he and Hooda, who made 17 not out off six balls, secured Lucknow’s second straight win over Chennai, replacing the five-time winners in fourth spot.

Needing 17 to win in the final over, Stoinis smashed Mustafizur Rahman for a six and three fours, including one off a no ball.

As LSG pulled off a rare double over CKS, multiple records were broken and rewritten on Tuesday night:
* With the famous win, Lucknow now hold the record of the highest successful chase at the Chepauk. The 211 which LSG hunted down, pipped CSK’s record of 206 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2012.
* Stoinis (124*) scripted history, breaking Paul Valthaty’s (120*) 13-year-old IPL record of highest individual scores in IPL run-chases.
* In 3 games before this at the venue this season, no team had managed to beat CSK. Courtesy a Stoinis show, LSG is the first team to breach Fortress Chepauk this season.
* The win is Lucknow’s second over CSK in a span of 5 days. Last week at the Ekana — the home of LSG — KL Rahul and Co. pulled off an 8-wicket win over CSK.
* The chase is now LSG’s third highest ever in the IPL. 213 vs RCB in 2023 and 211 against CSK in 2022 are the other two biggest chases for Lucknow.
* With LSG scoring 87 in the last 36 balls, they are now fourth on the list of highest targets successfully chased in last six overs. Rajasthan Royals pulling off 96 runs in the last 6 overs remains the highest team score achieved during a chase.
* The 124 not out smashed by Stoinis is now the highest individual score against CSK in the IPL, bettering Virender Sehwag’s 122 for Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in 2014 in Qualifier 2.
* Stoinis now is the second highest individual scorer for LSG. Quinton de Kock’s 140 not out tops the list. De Kock smashed it against KKR in 2022.
* The match saw 2 hundreds being scored in a same match, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Stoinis.
* Gaikwad, who scored unbeaten 108 Hashim Amla and Sanju Samson on the list of batters with most IPL hundreds in defeats. All three have a couple of hundreds each in a losing cause. RCB’s Virat Kohli tops the list with three tons in defeats.
