MUMBAI: A lecture by writer Devdutt Pattanaik scheduled for Friday once again saw furore on the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay campus with a section of students opposing it and another group wanting it to take place. Finally, despite the skeletal population on campus, as many students had returned home for Diwali, the talk was held.
On Friday, another organisation, Vivek Vichar Manch‘s Maharashtra chapter, wrote to Mumbai police commissioner asking him to take action against “elements” who were “vitiating the campus’ environment” and “instigating students” by adopting “divisive policies”.Students fromIIT-Bombay filed a police complaint against a professor and a guest lecturer who allegedly expressed support for Hamas and terrorists during a lecture. The students demanded an FIR ought to be registered against them. The lecture took place as part of a coursework on November 6.
A complaint was filed by Omkar Supekar, a master’s student of humanities and social science, against professor Sharmistha Saha and Sudhanva Deshpande who is known for his association with Jana Natya Manch.
Vivek Vichar Manch is organising a protest at the college’s main gate on Saturday.
“On November 6, as part of coursework, a screening of a documentary based on Palestine was scheduled. After this, the professor invited Deshpande as a speaker. Before the event, we raised an objection to his speech, but IIT-B administration did not take any cognisance of our complaint,” Supekar said. In an open letter, a PhD student said, “Political discussions on organising protests, criticising government, & maligning Hinduism were frequent in classrooms.”
