Pro-Palestine protests: Over 90 arrested at USC over ‘trespassing’

NEW DELHI: Several individuals were detained by the Los Angeles Police Department during a pro-Palestine protest at the University of Southern California campus on Wednesday.
The demonstration saw clashes between the police and protesters, with tensions escalating throughout the event. The LAPD reported a total of 93 arrests by 10 pm, with those detained facing charges of misdemeanor trespassing.
Following the arrests, supporters of the pro-Palestine movement organized another protest outside the detention center.The USC campus gates were closed in response to students and protesters occupying Alumni Park, urging the university to sever financial ties with Israel amidst the ongoing conflict. Campus access was restricted, requiring individuals to show ID for entry.
Footage from NewsChopper4 captured campus police dismantling encampments set up as part of the Gaza Solidarity Occupation demonstrations. Around 5:30 pm, the LAPD issued a dispersal order to clear the protesters from the campus. While the initial demonstration was peaceful, the situation escalated as the evening progressed, with some participants throwing objects at officers.
Despite law enforcement orders, protesters remained defiant, linking arms and continuing their chants. Any further arrests were stated to be carried out by the USC Department of Public Safety, with support from LAPD officers. An alert was issued by the university to notify students and faculty of the ongoing demonstration activity at the center of the campus.
The incident at USC reflected the broader wave of pro-Palestine demonstrations taking place across the US, highlighting the deepening tensions surrounding the conflict. As the situation unfolded, both protesters and law enforcement remained engaged in a standoff, emphasizing the complex dynamics at play during such demonstrations.
